“Hunt the military-industrial complex across stylish comic book micro-sandboxes in this fast-paced covert revenge thriller FPS from the developers of El Paso, Elsewhere.”
#game #review

I am your Beast is a true power fantasy, but unlike many games that use a more general “white guy has an excuse to commit indiscriminate violence” setting, you play as Alphonse Harding, a black COI operative who refuses to do another of his 6 “one last jobs”, and has the entirety of an intelligence organizations agents sent after him to make him come back. As a first person game, having his hands and visible, the constant visual reminder that you are playing a black man, who is dehumanized through the violence inflicted on him, turns the power fantasy into a revenge fantasy.

The game is an extraordinary first person movement shooter. The controls are extremely tight and the subtle aim assist and weapon mechanics make the game focused less around shooting and more around moving, you constantly throw weapons once you are out of ammo, explode downed enemy’s heads with a kick, and use the arsenal of your enemies against them.
Between the levels (which are extremely replay-able for better times and scores) and the radio conversations (which are some of the best voice acting I’ve heard in a while) the game’s pacing is very approachable. Its easy to pick up and put down or swap between levels if you get frustrated or bored. The story is an hour or two long, I have 5 hours in the game currently, but there are challenge maps, an extra small story mode, and a remix mode of the main games levels.
The soundtrack by RJ Lake is also a huge standout. High energy techno and house to run and gun too, with the final level’s theme TYRANTS BETTER RUN (sung by Xalavier Nelson, who voices the main character and is a lead dev) being a significant standout for the raw energy and passion in it. It’s one of the crowning moments of the game, a perfect climax. It’s an excellent example of pacing a game.

Strange Scaffold has such a brilliant creative direction, and I appreciate the shortness of the games while they are jam packed with tight gameplay and immaculate vibes. I can’t wait for El Paso, Elsewhere 2, and the rest of what Strange Scaffold will create.
